1974 NASCAR International Stock Car Racing Rule Book
Section 18 -- Point Funds

1. Point fund money must be paid by promoters for all racemeets[sic] according to the schedules shown in 4a and 4b of this section.

a. Points and point fund money will be established on a National basis for the Winston Cup Grand National and other Grand National divisions, and points will be awarded according to schedules shown in sub-paragraph 5a. Point funds will be established according to sub-paragraph 4a and distributed according to sub-paragraphs 6a and 6b.

b. Points and point fund money will be established on a National, State and Track basis for the Late Model Sportsman and Modified divisions except for those events designated as National, State or Sectional Championships. Points and point fund money will be established on a State and Track basis for the Limited Sportsman, Hobby and Stock Car divisions. Points and point fund money will be established on a Track basis only for the Mini-Stock division. Points will be awarded according to schedule shown in sub-paragraph 5c. Point funds will be established and apportioned according to sub-paragraph 4b and distributed to drivers only according to schedule shown in sub-paragraph 6c.

(1) In events designated as Late Model Sportsman or Modified National or Sectional Championships, points and point fund money will be established on a National basis only (No State or Track), and points shall be awarded according to the schedule shown in sub-paragraph 5b. Point funds will be established according to sub-paragraph 4b, and allocated to the National fund (No State or Track). Point funds will be distributed according to sub-paragraph 6c. A race must carry a $5,000 minimum purse to qualify as a National, State or Sectional Championship.

(2) In events designated as Late Model Sportsman or Modified State Championships, points and point fund money will be established on a State basis only (No National or Track), and points shall be awarded according to the schedule shown in sub-paragraph 5b. Point funds will be established according to sub-paragraph 4b, and allocated to the State fund (No National or Track). Point fund will be distributed according to sub-paragraph 6c. A race must carry a $5,000 minimum purse to qualify as a State Championship event.

NOTE: Tracks operating on a weekly basis will be allowed two non-championship races per season for which double points will be awarded upon approval from NASCAR. One double point program may be awarded on the completion of five regular programs including the last four weekly programs from the preceding year's operation under NASCAR sanction. (NO DOUBLE POINTS AWARDED FOR NATIONAL, STATE OR SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RACES).

2. A driver will be credited only with points earned in the car in which he started the feature or championship event, and the starting driver will be credited with all points earned by that car in that event. A driver is ineligible to receive points for a race in which he has secured a relief driver for the purpose of enabling himself to compete in a second race while the first race is still in progress. To be eligible for points, driver and car must start first official lap of race (Pace laps do not count). A driver cannot receive points for more than one car in the race.

NOTE: It is customary for drivers to share their point money with their car owners, and should the drivers be called upon to name the owners of the cars in which they accumulated the greatest number of points, they alone will be responsible for the selections.

3. In case of any ties, monies and points for the tied positions shall be pooled and divided equally among the contestants involved in the tie.

4. POINT FUNDS WILL BE ESTABLISHED AS FOLLOWS:
(In no division will manufacturers' prize money be considered in the establishment of the point fund).

a. Winston Cup Grand National, and other Grand National divisions.

(1) Events up to 249 miles--$75 per thousand of purse payoff.

(2) Events 250 to 399 miles--$100 per thousand of purse payoff.

(3) Events 400 miles and over--$125 per thousand of purse payoff.

b. All other divisions (regardless of race distances):

$5 per hundred of purse payoff.

NOTE: Except for events designated as National, State or Sectional Championships, Point Fund money will be apportioned as follows in these divisions:

(1) Late Model Sportsman division: 75 per cent to Track fund, 10 per cent to State fund, 15 per cent to National fund.

(2) Modified division: 75 per cent to Track fund, 10 per cent to State fund, 15 per cent to National fund.

(3) Limited Sportsman, Hobby and Stock Car divisions: 75 per cent to Track fund, 25 per cent to State fund.

(4) Mini-Stock division: 100 per cent to Track fund.

5. CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS WILL BE AWARDED AS FOLLOWS:

a. Winston Cup Grand National and other Grand National divisions. (Drivers and car owners). (Points will be awarded for finishing position only).

WINSTON CUP GRAND NATIONAL EVENTS: To be determined by multiplying the aggregate of the posted promoter racing purses, including entry bonus, won by the competitor...by the number of events in which the competitor has competed...by a .001 factor. A race multiple shall only be awarded for races in which a driver or an owners car has started the race.

EXAMPLE: Event No.1...$5,000 won by competitor
Event No. 2...$2,500 won by competitor
Aggregate $7,500 x 2 events x .001 factor
= 15.00 points.

(In case of a tie in the point standing, the driver with the most money earned from the posted promoter racing purses will occupy the higher position in the point standing).

OTHER GRAND NATIONAL EVENTS: 50 points to win, with one point less for each succeeding position. 50, 49, 48, etc. (Race winner will receive 10 points in addition to the first position points here shown). (Points awarded for finishing positions only).

Lap Points: In addition to the points awarded for finishing positions, lap points will be awarded for the number of laps completed. Lap points will be computed according to the following track distance conversion factors:

0 up to 1 mile .......... .25 x number of laps completed.
1 mile track .......... .50 x number of laps completed.
1.3 mile track .......... .70 x number of laps completed.
1 1/2 mile track .......... .75 x number of laps completed.
2 mile track .......... 1.00 x number of laps completed.
2 1/2 mile track .......... 1.25 x number of laps completed.

(No lap points awarded in Winston Cup Grand National Division).

b. Late Model Sportsman and Modified National, State or Sectional Championship races (Points awarded according to amounts of promoter purses as follows):

c. All other divisions, including Late Model Sportsman and Modified Non-championship races and Limited Sportsman, Hobby, Mini-Stock and Stock Car races. (Points awarded according to finishing positions as follows):

(All finishers below 25th position receive 2 points each)

d. The winning driver of all Modified and Late Model Sportsman Special Events will receive 16 bonus points. Definition of a Special Event: All team races, National, State or Sectional Championships; combination programs or any feature race which is run over a greater distance, and for a larger purse, than is customarily presented by the track in its established weekly programs. A SPECIAL EVENT SANCTION IS REQUIRED FOR EVERY SPECIAL EVENT RUN, and applications for such sanctions must be filed with NASCAR Headquarters at least three (3) weeks in advance of proposed race dates as set forth in Section 4, paragraph 2, of these rules. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL BONUS POINTS BE AWARDED IN EVENTS FOR WHICH A SPECIAL EVENT SANCTION HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED.

6. POINT FUNDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AS FOLLOWS:

a. Winston Cup Grand National drivers and car owners:

After the point fund in this division has been divided one-half to the drivers' fund and one-half to the car owners' fund, distribution of the point fund money to drivers and car owners will be made according to the following percentage schedule:

NOTE: THE GRAND NATIONAL CAR OWNERS' SPECIAL POINT FUND will be disbursed in accordance with the agreements entered into by the Awards and Achievement Bureau of NASCAR, Inc., and the participating Grand National Car Owners.

b. Other Grand National drivers and car owners:

After the point fund in these divisions has been divided one-half to the drivers' fund and one-half to the car owners' fund, distribution of the point fund money to drivers and car owners will be made according to the following percentage schedule:

7. MANUFACTURERS' POINT CHAMPIONSHIP.

Points to be awarded to a car division (Dodge, Plymouth, Ford, Mercury, etc.) for the top finishing positions in each Winston Cup Grand National and other Grand National races distributed as follows:

A manufacturer will be eligible for points for the best position only. (Example: If a Ford finishes in the top three positions and a Chevrolet finishes in fourth position, Ford will receive 9 points and Chevrolet will receive 3 points. No points will be awarded for second and third positions). To be eligible for points, a car must finish in the top six positions.

8. NASCAR reserves the right to establish, maintain, compile, publish and otherwise operate and award points and point funds and trophies through the facilities of the Awards and Achievement Bureau of NASCAR, Inc., under its rules and regulations.

a. All members agree to abide by decisions of NASCAR executive officers in establishing and administering the point funds.

9. The 1974 Championship point season for the Winston Cup Grand National and other Grand National divisions will officially close December 31, 1974. The 1974 championship point season for all other divisions will officially close on November 3, 1974, and any races scheduled thereafter shall count toward the 1975 standings.

10. All point money will be awarded at the annual Victory Awards Dinner with date and place to be announced at the conclusion of the season.

a. Eligibility to participate in the point fund may be forfeited by any member violating NASCAR rules and/or regulations prior to the presentation of the 1974 awards at the Awards and Victory Dinner in 1975.

11. In the event the championship point fund collected at any track for any division does not exceed $200 at the end of the season, the portion usually assigned for track distribution will be transferred to the State, National or trophy funds as the case may be, and a track champion will not be named. In the event a track fails to run the required 10 events necessary for an official championship, the division of the point money will follow the same formula.
