TABLE 1 Notes
- Race - The first one or two digits is the race number,
assigned depending upon when the race occurred in a given season. The last
two digits represent the year in which the race took place. As an
example, race 2769 was the 27th race in the 1969 season. Race numbers
in a blue cell indicate a Ford/Mercury win; red is for a Chrysler victory.
- Driver, Car - If these aren't self-explanatory, stop reading
now and leave this site immediately.
- Track Length - This should also be pretty straightforward, with
this explanation: when appended to track length, "r" means road course
and "d" refers to a dirt track.
- Confirmed? - "YES" indicates that
statistical information supplied by
Greg Fielden's Forty Years of
Stock Car Racing, Volume Three has been verified by at least one
other source. The preferred method of confirmation is through photographs
of winning vehicles, which can sometimes be found in contemporary
sources, such as Stock Car Racing Magazine. Specific make and
model information found within a story narrative, as opposed to that
information simply found listed in a table within a magazine or other
source, also serves as a valuable confirmation tool. "NO" indicates
that no verification has been made. Blue again signals a win for
Ford/Mercury and red is for Chrysler. Only races of a mile or more
are highlighted with a color in this column.
Finding a "NO" in the confirmed column should not be reason for concern,
as information supplied by Greg Fielden has on the whole proven to be
very reliable. A few discrepancies between Fielden's data and
other reliable sources have been identified, however, where it appears
that Fielden's data is likely incorrect. These errors are related to the
model and/or model year of some cars driven at short track events.
Within the context of this investigation, which is primarily concerned with
the five aero cars on longer tracks, these errors are not terribly
significant....yet. If, however, several more errors concerning the Charger
500 are eventually located, this may alter somewhat the complexion
of the WRHDTNAW page. But this is yet to be determined. Discrepancies
that have been located thus far are:
